Today I’ll be explaining the first steps you need to follow to get your website on Google. But I’m also going to cover some other common questions:

  • How to get my page on Google

  • How to remove a cached page from Google search
  • How to get your business to appear on Google maps
  • How to get on the first page of Google

How to get your website on Google

So, the first way to make Google aware of your website, with directions to all the pages you want the crawlers to discover, is to create an XML sitemap. This is basically a list of all the web pages you want people to find, formatted in an xml file which can be easily read by the search engines.

There are several tools that can help you to create this file, with directions on how to upload it to your website, including Screaming Frog and XML Sitemap Generator

Google Search Console is a free tool you can sign up for with a Google account. It allows you to monitor things like:

  • How often Google crawls your website, using the crawl stats report, which also shows the average time it takes for your pages to load
  • Google Index report, giving information around how many pages have been indexed (so the number of pages that could potentially appear in the search results)
  • Details around how users engaged with your search listings
    • Using the Search Analytics Report you can look at which keywords are driving clicks and impressions, while filtering by pages, devices, countries and even devices, based on a set time period of up to 90 days in the past
    • Average positions for keywords

But it also allows you to Submit your XML Sitemap and check how many of these pages have been indexed.

Another way to check which of your pages have been indexed by Google is to use the site search operator – just go to Google and search site: then your website which will return the pages that Google has discovered. You can also click the arrow next to the URL and click ‘Cached’ to see when Google last saw your page.

How to get my page on Google

Using the Fetch as Google tool in Google search console, you can ask Google to crawl a page and send an indexing request.

1. Under ‘Crawl’, click ‘Fetch as Google’

2. Enter the URL (without the domain)

3. Click ‘Fetch and render’

4. Once the status moves from ‘Pending’ to ‘Partial’, click ‘Request Indexing’ then if you just want to submit a single page, select ‘Crawl only this page’ (500 times per month), or if you want Google to crawl all pages linked to from this page, select ‘Crawl this URL and its direct links’ (10 times per month)

You can also click the submitted link to see how Googlebot saw the page compared to how a visitor would see it, allowing you to check that it is appearing as expected, along with any errors encountered.

How long does it take to get a website on Google

Pages are usually indexed quite quickly – you can check your website is being indexed by going to Google and searching cache:website.uk/example which will return the last time the page was cached.

How to remove a cached page from Google search

You can also use Google Search Console to remove a page from the index in a few simple steps:

1. First, delete the page then make sure it returns a 404

2. In Google Search Console, go to ‘Google Index’ > ‘Remove URLs’

3. Click ‘Temporarily hide’ then enter the full URL you want to remove, and click ‘Continue’ then select ‘Temporarily hide page from search results and remove from cache’

How to get your business to appear on Google maps

This can be done using Google’s free business listing service – Google My Business.

1. First check whether your business already features in Google maps (this can happen without you even submitting it). Business + postcode

2. If there is a listing, click ‘Claim this business’ then tick the box to say that you’re authorised to manage the business and click continue

3. Choose how you would like to receive your verification code (phone, email, postcard)

4. Add your business details – best to include as much info as possible and ensure it’s consistent with how your information is listed on your site and other sites

How to get on the first page of Google

This is the answer that every business wants to know, but without spending money on AdWords and paying your way to the top, nobody can guarantee a page one placement.

♪ music ♪ Hello, and welcome to the UK Domain. Today I’m going to be looking into how to get your website on Google, so that’s made up of five different sections.

So, how to get my page on Google? (that’s an individual page), how long does it take to get a website on Google? How to remove a cached page from Google Search, how to get your business to appear on Google Maps, and then finally, how to get on the first page of Google.

So to begin with, the first thing that you have to do is create an XML Sitemap. This is basically a file that has all of the different pages that you want Google to be able to discover, and it’s in such a format that you can submit to Google, and they can easily understand. But to be able to submit it to Google, you need a Google Search Console account.

So Google Search Console is a free tool that you can sign up for with a Google account, it also allows you to look at things like how often Google crawls your website. So you can use the Crawl Stats report, which also shows the average time it takes for your page to load. You can look at the Google Index report, which gives information around how many pages have been indexed. So the number of pages you could potentially appear for in Google Search results. And details around how users engage with your search listings, so you can use the Search Analytics report, using the Search Analytics report you can look at which queries are driving traffic to your website. You can look by clicks, impressions, and you can even look at things like click-through rate and position. Then you can filter that by which page people are coming to, or the country they’re coming from, or even the device that they’re using.

Google Search Console is also very useful because it allows you to submit your site map. So you just click under Crawl and Sitemaps, and then on the right-hand side you click Add or test a site map. Then put the URL of your site map in there and click Submit. This is also great as well, because it lets you check how many of those pages that you’ve submitted have actually been indexed, and then you can find out if there are any issues with the pages.

So the next point we’re going to look at, is how long does it take to get a website on Google. Using the Fetch As Google tool in Google Search Console, you can ask Google to crawl a page and send an indexing request. So under the Crawl section click Fetch As Google, enter the URL without the domain, and then click on the Fetch And Render button. Once the status moves from Pending to Partial, click Request Indexing. Then if you just want to submit a single page, select Crawl Only This URL. You get 500 of these per month. Or if you want Google to crawl all of the pages they’re linked to from that page, select Crawl This URL and its direct links. But you only get 10 of these per month, so use them sparingly.

You can also use click the submitted link to see how Googlebot saw the page, and compare it to how a visitor would see it, allowing you to check that it’s appearing as expected, along with any other errors that it may have found. Pages are usually indexed quite quickly, so you can check the status by going to Google and searching cache, colon, then your website and the page which will return a little bit of information to show you the last time the page was cached.

So the next point that I’m going to be looking at, is how to remove a cached page from Google Search. There are lots of different reasons why you might want to do this. You may have found a search result in Google that is an old page that you no longer want Google to find, or maybe they found a page that saw sensitive information that should never have been found in the first place.

So first off, you want to make sure that the page returns a 404, so you want to delete that page. Then using Google Search Console, click on Google Index, and then under that you can click on Remove URLs. And then there’s a button that you can click, called, which is Temporarily Hide. Once this pops up, you can enter the full URL that you want to remove. And then click Continue, and then select Temporarily Hide Pages From Search Results, and Remove From Cache. It can take a little bit of time for these pages to disappear. But the best way to check is to go to Google, type in site, colon, and then the webpage or the full URL. And then if it’s still appearing in Google Search, then obviously it’s still there, but it should disappear within a few days.

So the next point that we’re going to look at is how to get your business to appear on Google Maps. So when you’re searching for a business, often you’ll see all the results show up in Google Maps. And it’s very easy to get your business in there as well, but first off you need to create a Google My Business account. So first off if you go to google.co.uk/intl/en/business that will take you to Google My Business website. You click the Start Now button in the top right-hand corner, and then if you start adding your details, so start off with a business name, it may be that your business already actually has a listing.

So you’ll find this, it should start to appear as you type the business. But just enter all of your details in there, and make sure that they’re consistent with the details on your website. If Google does find that your business is already online, you can literally click on it, and then click to verify so you can claim this business, and then you need to tick the box to say that you’re authorised to manage the business, and click continue. If you don’t have your business there, just go ahead and add all your details, and then you can create the account that way. You’ll also need to verify your account, so you can choose how you would like to verify it either by phone, email, or postcard. So once your business has been verified it will appear in Google Maps, and should appear against local search results when people are searching for businesses similar to yours in your area.

And finally, we’re going to look at how to get on the first page of Google. So this is the question that every business wants to know, but unfortunately, nobody can guarantee that they’re going to be able get you onto the first page of Google’s organic search results. You can however, pay your way to get up there using AdWords. But if you do want to try and improve your chances to get to number one or to page one, there are lots of things you can do to improve your SEO. So we’re going to link to some videos that will help you do that below. So I hope you found this useful. And we’ll see you next time. ♪ music ♪
